Beyond the Red Desert
During November and December, the Johnson County Library’s Buffalo and Kaycee branches hosted “The Red Desert,” a touring exhibition of photography by Martin Stupich by the University of Wyoming Art Museum.
Stupich has photographed the Red Desert since 2000, preserving the both the natural and man-made landscape of this 15,000-square-mile basin in southern Wyoming. His work captures the majesty of desert cliffs alongside the utility of railroads.
Stupich has been documenting America’s cultural landscape since 1975. One of his projects involved photographing Nevada’s Comstock silver mining district.
The exhibition is touring Wyoming, having begun two years ago and continuing through 2011. It is now on display at the Natrona County Public Library in Casper through Feb. 26. It will then travel to the Campbell County Public Library in Gillette from March 8 to April 23 before coming to the Sheridan Artists Guild for May.
