The purpose of this policy is to insure the best use of and access to the Internet for the greatest number of our patrons. In response to advances in technology and the changing needs of the community, the Johnson County Library provides access to the Internet through its public use terminals.
The Library has no control over the information accessed and cannot be held responsible for the content or quality of the information retrieved. All internet resources accessible through the Library are provided equally to all users, with the understanding that it is the individual’s responsibility to demonstrate judgment, respect for others and appropriate conduct while using Johnson County Library resources and facilities.
Internet computers will not be used for illegal activity, to access illegal materials or to access materials which by local standards would be obscene.
SUPERVISING CHILDREN’S USE
It is the Library’s policy that parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding what library resources are appropriate for their children. A parent or legal guardian must accompany a minor child and sign a permission form before the child can use the Internet. There will be some resources, which parents may feel are inappropriate for their children. Parents should let their children know if there are materials which they do not want them to use. LIBRARY STAFF WILL NOT SUPERVISE MINORS’ USE OF THE INTERNET. Parents are encouraged to supervise their child’s Internet sessions.
CHOOSING AND EVALUATING SOURCES
The Internet is a global entity with a highly diverse user population and information content. Library patrons use it at their own risk. The Library does not provide filters to protect users from materials they may find offensive. As with printed information, not all sources of the Internet provide accurate, complete or current information. Users should evaluate Internet sources just as they do printed publications, questioning the validity of the information.
